Handlingsplan mot marin forsøpling – strategi for renere hav og reduksjon av marint avfall

New action plan against marine litter!

The Directorate of Fisheries has launched a new action plan for 2026–2030 to reduce littering from fishing, recreational fishing, and aquaculture. The goal is to prevent gear from being lost – before it becomes ghost fishing.

“The Directorate of Fisheries' goal for the work against marine littering is to make our work related to cleanup at sea unnecessary. This requires both preventive measures and technical solutions that make it easier to recover lost gear.”
— Division Director Jon-Erik Henriksen, Directorate of Fisheries

TrapSaver™ – prevention in practice
Lost traps and gear are one of the largest sources of marine litter along the Norwegian coast. Every trap that is lost can continue to catch fish and shellfish for years – as an invisible and destructive ghost gear.

With TrapSaver™ , NorTrap introduces a simple and effective solution:
An integrated mechanism automatically releases a buoy after a predefined time if the gear is not retrieved. This allows the equipment to be easily located and rescued – before it becomes an environmental issue.

Norwegian innovation – in line with the goals of the Directorate of Fisheries
TrapSaver™ developed in Norway for Norwegian conditions. Robust construction, subsea-approved materials, and long lifespan make the system a natural choice for fishermen who want to reduce loss and contribute to a cleaner ocean.
