Ghost nets: A hidden threat to the ocean

Every year, tens of thousands of traps disappear along our coast, and many of them become ghost traps – lost fishing gear that continues to catch animals uncontrollably. In Norway alone, it is estimated that between 20,000 and 30,000 traps are lost annually. These traps remain on the seabed and can catch crabs, lobsters, and fish for years, ultimately leading to unnecessary deaths.

Why do the traps disappear?
🔹 Bad weather and strong currents account for as much as 40–50% of the losses – storms, strong currents, and ice can dislodge traps and carry them far away.
🔹 Theft and sabotage are a hidden but significant cause of ghost fishing. Fishermen frequently experience that their traps are stolen or damaged, leading to gear disappearing and continuing to fish uncontrollably.

This is not only an environmental issue but also an economic loss for fishermen. Solutions such as TrapSaver™ can help reduce the loss of traps and thus minimize ghost fishing. By using new technology, we can protect both fish resources and those who depend on the sea.
